City Council Vacancy

Last night, Carlisle City Council accepted the resignation of Councilman Josiah Doughty. Josiah and his family will be moving for a job opportunity in Mississippi. It was noted by several council members that Josiah did a great job of jumping in to his position with both feet after he was appointed. He took an active approach in leadership and made a point to work closely with elected officials and staff to tackle many different topics. He will definitely be missed by the community and we wish him and his family luck in their new adventure.

Councilman Doughty’s position runs through December 31, 2019 and is up for election this year. After accepting Councilman Doughty’s resignation, Council decided to move forward with appointment proceedings. We will be accepting applications from interested citizens to be appointed to fill the term until 5:00 p.m. on June 27. Council will hold a special meeting to interview candidates and appoint a replacement on July 1, 2019.

Though Council has chose to move forward with filling the vacancy by appointment, the electors of the City have the right to file a petition requiring that the vacancy be filled by a special election, by filing a petition in accordance with Iowa Code Section 372.13(2)(a) within fourteen days after publication of notice in the Carlisle Citizen or within fourteen days after appointment is made by the City Council, whichever is later.

Anyone interested in applying for appointment to this council position may file an application with the City of Carlisle. The application can be obtained by contacting the Carlisle City Administrator or Carlisle City Clerk at 989-3224 or by sending an email to cityhall@carlisleiowa.org. Those interested may also schedule time with the City Administrator to learn about current topics being discussed with the City Council.

The timeline for appointment will look like:

Official notice runs in Carlisle Citizen – June 5

Final day council accepts applications – June 27

Special council meeting for interviews – July 1 – 6:30 p.m.

Last day for citizen petition to be filed – July 15
