Carlisle Welcomes Officer April Abbas to the Carlisle Police Force

april-abbas-2016-2April is originally from Laurens Iowa, where she graduated from Laurens Marathon high school.  Right out of high school, April worked for the Laurens Police Department as a reserve officer, one of two college jobs while working towards her degree.

April earned her Criminal Justice degree while attending Iowa Law Enforcement Academy of Western Iowa.  Following that degree, she worked for Buena Vista University (BVU) security. A year later April enrolled at BVU, while continuing to work for BVU security, where she finished her degree with a bachelor’s in psychology.

In 2010 Officer Abbas was hired by the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s office where she worked as a deputy sheriff for 6 years.

“I’ve always wanted to be a police officer”, states Abbas, “When I was growing up my dad was a Fire Chief and my Mom was an Ambulance director.  I grew up around emergency services my whole life and public service was a big influence on me when I was little.

“It’s been a lot of hard work getting to this point in my career.  When working in law enforcement you have to get your foot in the door, wear a lot of hats and meet a lot of people in order to get established in the field.  You don’t just show up and they give you a badge, you have to earn it.”

Growing up in a small community outside of Laurens, Officer Abbas knew when she made the move, she wanted to work for a smaller department.   Abbas adds, “I didn’t want to work for a big city department where you were lost in the numbers.  I wanted to work in a small community where you have the ‘home’ feel like I did back home where I know everybody.”

Officer Abbas concludes, “I feel like I slid right into the position and didn’t miss a beat.  Everything is falling into place and I already feel like part of the team. Carlisle is a great community with amazing growth potential.  We have the small town feel in a close-knit community but at the same time we’re near enough to Des Moines that the activities of a larger city are just a few minutes away. The Carlisle community has a lot going for it!”
